Antigone Bandanas
← Art / Printmaking

I had block printed bandanas on my mind for months, so much so that I had 30 blank bandanas sitting in my supply cabinet and a couple of designs sketched out on scrap paper. But starting something new is hard and it was clear they were a new frontier!
I had several blocks carved that were aesthetically aligned with Antigone director Erin Bennett’s vision for her production of Anne Carson’s translation and it was a joyful realization for me that Erin was open to using them to decorate bits of the set. When Erin’s desire for characters to have bandanas was revealed and she welcomed me going wild with them…well, it was what I needed to leap headfirst into printing bandanas.
Me being me, I see things I would do differently with each, but each was a part of the learning process and unless the actors and crew were just being kind for my sake, they made lovely accessories within the play that the actors were excited to take home with them when it was all over.
All are printed with Speedball Fabric & Paper Block Printing Ink. The first (Antigone’s) has some details in Posca Paint Markers.
(I’m horrified I didn’t take a better picture of the last one - but it’s a pattern I’ll make a lot for obvious reasons so its okay)
